Understanding the Roles of MonteNova Academy vs Impaq

At MonteNova Academy, transparency is important to us. Because we operate as a tutor and learning support centre, not a registered school, it is essential that parents understand the division of responsibilities between MonteNova Academy, Impaq, and parents or guardians.

This guide outlines who is responsible for what, so expectations are clear and learners are fully supported. Unlike a school setup, as a learning centre we will require your support from home to ensure each learner reaches their potential and stays on track with the online portal.

1. What MonteNova Academy Provides

We support learners academically, emotionally, and socially by helping them with structure and routine.

Academic Support

  • Daily in-person tutoring support facilitated by subject tutors.
  • Small tutor groups with a maximum of 10 learners per session.
  • Assistance with understanding content, completing activities, and preparing for assessments.
  • Structured learning schedule with longer learning blocks for deep focus.
  • Quiet study spaces and supervised study sessions.
  • Additional academic support from 8–9am each morning.

Learning Environment

  • Calm, safe, nurturing spaces.
  • Learning-space routines, expectations, and behaviour management.
  • Access to printers, Wi-Fi, and learning-space resources.
  • Supervision during the centre’s operating hours.
  • Breaktime monitoring and informal well-being check-ins.

Holistic Development

  • Real Life Orientation (RLO): life skills, practical tasks, community outreach, fun and educational outings, and related activities.
  • Optional extra murals, such as chess, morning walks, fishing, and outings.
  • Opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.

Communication

  • Updates regarding learner progress, behaviour, or concerns.
  • Assistance where possible if parents require documentation or support from Impaq.
  • Clear communication about centre operations, holidays, and expectations.

Important: What We Do Not Do

Because we are not a school, we do not:

  • Issue official reports or marks.
  • Handle Impaq registration or legal home-education registration.
  • Provide SGB functions or school-level discipline structures.
  • Replace parents in their legal responsibilities as home-education supervisors.

2. What Impaq Provides

Impaq is the official curriculum and assessment provider. They fulfil the academic and administrative functions that a registered school normally would.

Curriculum & Content

  • CAPS-aligned lesson material for all subjects.
  • Online learning portal with video lessons, slides, quizzes, and practice activities.
  • Weekly or termly work plans and learning guides.

Assignments & Assessments

  • Formal assessments for each subject, including tests, tasks, projects, and exams.
  • Submission portals for tasks or portfolios, where applicable.
  • Marking and moderation of certain assessments.
  • Final report cards and academic records.

Administration

  • Learner registration with Impaq.
  • SACAI exam registration for the FET Phase.
  • Support queries through their Customer Experience team.
  • Progress tracking and official communication regarding assessments.

Examinations

  • They determine exam dates, venues where applicable, and formats.
  • They provide exam papers and handle marking and moderation.
  • They issue final results and grade progression decisions.

3. What Parents/Guardians Are Responsible For

As required under South African home education guidelines:

Legal & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Registering your child as a home-education learner for Grade 9 only.
  • Registering your child with Impaq yearly.
  • Ensuring fees, both Impaq and MonteNova, are paid.
  • Overseeing submission of assessments to Impaq.
  • Ensuring your child complies with Impaq deadlines.

Partnering With Us

  • Communicating concerns timeously.
  • Supporting homework, studying, and exam preparation.
  • Providing stationery, textbooks and required devices.

Emotional Support

  • Working with us to support your child’s holistic well-being.
  • Joining meetings or discussions when recommended.
